Il est n\u008e dans la bourgade de Juruli (au c\u00cfur des mines de Joda), n'a jamais obtenu de travail, et est un \"OBC\" (Other Backward Classes), une basse caste souvent m\u008epris\u008ee et d\u008elaiss\u008ee en Inde.\rLa r\u008egion autour de Joda est le coeur de l'exploitation du fer en Orissa. Elle fait partie d'une cha\u0094ne g\u008eologique qui contient les plus importantes r\u008eserves de minerai de fer d'Asie. Une cinquantaine de compagnies y op\u008frent, ainsi que des mafias locales, et plusieurs multinationales du minerai font la queue aupr\u008fs du gouvernement local pour obtenir leur part du g\u0089teau. La grande majorit\u008e des ouvriers de la mine est issue des basses castes et des communaut\u008es indig\u008fnes. Ils forment la masse de travailleurs exploitables \u0088 merci, pour lesquels l'emploi est extr\u0090mement pr\u008ecaire, l'\u008education quasi inexistante, et les conditions sanitaires et d'habitat d\u008eplorables.
